Sustainable Design

Sustainable design is intrinsic to SSA’s firm culture. Truly responsible design, we believe, is inherently a sustainable design.

We are proud and active members of the Indian Green Building Council

Our commitment to effective, responsible architecture, engineering, planning and interiors services manifests itself through our capacity to implement integrated interdisciplinary designs that consider site, building and space as interrelated systems. As a full service design firm, we are uniquely positioned to leverage in-house expertise and custom sustainable design tools to create environmental friendly, sustainable designs.
At SSA we are dedicated to incorporating sustainable design concepts (also called “high-performance” or “green” design) in the way we do business and into every service we provide. We look beyond the basic services most architectural design firms provide and consider the environmental, financial, and human impacts of design decisions to provide realistic and effective solutions to complex problems. For sustainable development, planning for a greener infrastructure can set the stage for more walkable, bike able, diverse, liveable communities and neighbourhoods.
For green building projects, sustainable design begins in the early planning stage where site selection and building orientation critically affect the future performance of the planned facilities. Issues of energy use, conservation, water use, interconnected natural areas, and storm water integration all become critical drivers of the planning process in balance with facility program needs and budget considerations. In the facilities themselves, we focus on well-controlled day lighting to enhance occupant performance, healthy indoor air quality, energy efficient building envelope and HVAC systems, all designed to promote an energized environment and reduce operating costs.Designing to fit community needs and community context is of considerable importance. In order to foster greater community input and consensus building, at SSA, we often initiate a design charrette early in the design process. The charrette consists of a series of meetings to receive input from concerned constituencies and to explore design solutions to satisfy diverse needs and desires.

We take a reasoned and creative approach towards sustainable design, consistently achieving the highest standards by understanding what makes a difference. Our underlying objective is to efficiently maximize the potential of any scheme, while striving to minimize its impact on the environment.

Our Services

As a company we pride ourselves on being sustainability-conscious designers and drawing on a variety of sustainability measures wherever we can, and wherever it meets our client’s requirements

Sustainable Master Planning

Planning from an environmental standpoint takes into consideration the wider community context, overall watershed and storm water issues, buildable vs. non-buildable areas and connections to existing pedestrian and transportation infrastructure and seeks to improve the integration of uses rather than continue to fragment them. Issues of future expansion, energy requirements, circulation and regeneration beyond the site lead to a more dynamic master plan and one that can evolve as conditions change.

Sustainable Site Design

Ideally the choice of the site itself is a critical determinant. Brownfield sites are preferable over green fields sites when feasible. Issues of storm water integration, habitat restoration, community and pedestrian connections all become formative criteria along with solar and wind access, parking and hard surface reduction and overall site regeneration. Buildable versus non buildable areas are clearly established and the general layout and orientation of the buildings can then be determined

Sustainable Building Design

Once a suitable site has been located and the site analysed, space programming then establishes the owner’s needs. At this point a LEED™ Charrette is recommended to look at all the aspects of site, water, energy, materials and indoor air quality, day lighting and views before actual design commences. The results of this Charrette then become the Design Goals for the project. Building orientation, positioning on the site and massing all help establish both the aesthetics and performance of the building.

Green Interior Design

Green materials, good indoor air quality, day lighting, natural ventilation and connection to the outdoors, all affect the character of interior space. The cumulative effect of well-designed green interiors has been shown to have significant effects on productivity, information retention, absenteeism and health. SSA combines their expertise in all these areas to provide interior design services that are well designed meet budget and are beneficial to the occupants and the environment.

Sustainable Program Management

Through their expertise in Sustainable Design and range of services, SSA can plug into a larger Program Management Team and provide recommendations, structure, language and project review for larger programs where green design or LEED™ certification is an established goal.
